I use "docker" as my notification area and workrave is the only app I have which has an icon with a white background.  The other icons in the notification area are transparent.

I opened /usr/share/workrave/images/workrave-*.png in GIMP and the image do have a transparent background.  Therefore, the white background must come from the way they are drawn on the screen.

Please let me know if there's any change you'd like me to test on my machine.  I'm tracking svn.
