I use a single vertical gnome panel and neither the notification area nor the
stand-alone panel applets seem to deal with this ideally, though the stand-alone
one is obviously trying :)

The layout seems to be best when the applet is placed on a horizontal panel and
moved to the vertical one.  I would suggest the best way to deal with this would
be give a UI option to display the countdown timers in tool-tips instead of the
bars and to scale the bars to exactly fit the panel width.
